Times Square can be overwhelming, even overstimulating.
But there is something quite stirring about all the movement, all the motion of overlapping bodies and people and things, moving toward and past each other at the same time.
These moments feel like momentary coincidences, that we all just happen to be there, passing each other, for no reason.
But I wonder if there might be something more to it. I wonder if we are gathered simply for no reason.
The walls of modern industry overshadow these moments. The bright lights and images of advertisements and corporate marketing, looming over a people, towering over the gathering.
It feels like a warped kind of gathering, underneath the neon and LED.
There’s so much to see and marvel at and take photos of. We forget that peoples and bodies have been gathered there, underneath the artificial lights of billboards and screens.
We forget that we are gathered, seemingly without reason…
Sometimes I wonder if we gather for no reason at all.
